The game then arrived in Europe around the year 1000 thanks to the Arabs. This inventor seems to have been called Sassa or Sissa; In some legends he is the son of an Indian king, in others a minister, and in still others a Brahmin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The funniest legend<\/em> sees Sassa as King Kaid&#8217;s minister, who bored after bringing peace to the kingdom, asks his minister for help. Minister Sassa talks to him about this game and teaches him about it. The king is satisfied and offers him a reward. Sassa, modestly, says that he wants a silver Diram for the first square, two for the second, four for the third, and so on (the board has 64 squares).  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is, for each square it must have a Diram number = <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which for the 64th square alone means 9.223372037\u00d710\u00b9\u2078 Diram. The total of Sassa&#8217;s request to his king is an expression of this type:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31473\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chess has always been considered a very intelligent game, which requires great intellectual abilities and which develops the same skills and concentration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It helps children to develop their intellectual abilities (moving them away from modern tools that depress them) and the elderly to stave off brain aging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Chess and computers have always gone hand in hand since the beginning of computer science<\/em>, precisely to justify the complexity of the game and man&#8217;s desire to develop algorithms capable of playing chess and able to compete with international grandmasters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The first algorithms<\/strong> capable of playing chess were born in the late 1940s and early 1950s (Alan Turing was one of the scientists who signed these papers).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first software saw the light of day in 1967 (Mac Hack VI), then came programs for home computers (apple, spectrum, commodore).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question begins to spread:  <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8220;Will computers ever beat the man on the chessboard one day?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1969 International Master David Levy bet over a thousand pounds with artificial intelligence pioneer John McCarthy who, ten years later, would not be defeated by a computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/temp_new.vmenginelab.com\/en\/2017\/05\/04\/cloud-computing-origins-paternity-and-skepticism\/\"><a href=\"https:\/\/temp_new.vmenginelab.com\/en\/2017\/05\/04\/cloud-computing-origins-paternity-and-skepticism\/\">John McCarthy, for those who don&#8217;t know, is also considered the father of the Cloud Computing model.<\/a><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have to wait until 1996-1997, when IBM&#8217;s DeepBlue supercomputer starts to win a few games against the world champion Kasparov.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kasparov played against DeepBlue 6 times in those two years:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31578\" What a game and sacrifice by Deep Blue.} 1-0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DeepBlue makes a move (a horse sacrifice &#8211; Nxe6!) that shocked the world, Kasparov will quit after 19 moves. Such a match inspired the famous film:  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y9UMt-8gfW8\">Game Over, Kasparov and the machine<\/a><\/strong>&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_265  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nowadays, after a couple of decades, the competition between computers and chess grandmasters has died down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a grandmaster can examine dozens of alternatives for each move by imagining the development of the game forward by 6-8-10 moves, a current supercomputer goes beyond thousands to millions of moves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chess computers can count on a <em>huge database of games<\/em>, openings and endgames and an enormous computing capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Current World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen boasts <a href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elo\">ELO<\/a> rating<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>  highest ever 2882. While it is estimated that the ELO rating of current supercomputers reaches 3500-4000<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_divider et_pb_divider_38 et_pb_divider_position_ et_pb_space\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_divider_internal\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_image et_pb_image_84 et_animated et-waypoint\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t<span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"285\" src=\"https:\/\/temp_new.vmenginelab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Notebook-vs-Desktop.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" class=\"wp-image-31481\" srcset=\"http:\/\/temp_new.vmenginelab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Notebook-vs-Desktop.jpg 500w, http:\/\/temp_new.vmenginelab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Notebook-vs-Desktop-300x171.jpg 300w\" \/><\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_266  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Computer Vs Computer<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, nowadays, just as there are chess tournaments between men, international chess competitions for super computers only have been born.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside the raw computing power, scientists challenge each other by optimizing algorithms and recently exploiting neural networks:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>World Computer Chess Championship <\/b>\u25b6 <strong><br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/icga.org\/\">https:\/\/icga.org\/<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Top Chess Engine Championship \u25b6 <a href=\"https:\/\/tcec.chessdom.com\">https:\/\/tcec.chessdom.com<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By now, computer chess games are so optimized that a draw is the most common outcome.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The computer has now become a training and teaching tool for all chess players, both beginners and grandmasters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chessboard, from being a <\/span><b>battlefield<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between great and sublime human minds (in the past also the scene of the Cold War), becomes a <\/span><b>clash of bits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between computing power, algorithms and artificial intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Alpha-Zero<\/strong> , DeepMind&#8217;s artificial intelligence algorithm, now owned by Google, learns autonomously using neural networks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To learn how to play chess, Alpha-Zero played against himself by basic rules. In just a few hours, it can play 44 million games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is, like a human player, with over a century of experience and able to remember every move he has ever played, without missing a beat due to seniority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some time now, programmers have been using <em>heuristic evaluations<\/em>, a lateral thinking that guarantees better results than pure mathematical strength. In essence, the search is guided by allowing the computer to recognize the most promising strands, reducing the complexity of the algorithm both in a temporal sense (the duration of the search) and in a spatial sense (the memory occupied by the process).  <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>That is, the computer &#8220;thinks outside the box.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last April, the open-source machine learning engine LC0 won the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chess.com\/news\/view\/lc0-wins-computer-chess-championship-makes-history\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Computer Chess Championship<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and made history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This August, a chess engine (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chironchess.com\/\">Chiron<\/a>) developed by Italian Ubaldo Andrea Farina, came second at the 2019 World Computer Chess Championship held in Macau, China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the first time that an Italian program has finished in the top three in the world championship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The undefeated champion Komodo could count on a 128 Intel Xeon cores, while the Italian engine on 48 Intel Xeon cores.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both algorithms came out of the competition undefeated;
